“Don’t let your heart be troubled. Believe
in God. Believe also in Me.” John 14:1
There have been numerous times in my life
when God demonstrated His faithfulness.
During my first year of seminary, I applied
for a summer mission project. I drove a
school bus during the school year but had
nothing planned for the summer months. My
interview in January went well and I
anticipated hearing about my assignment in
April. I had not planned anything else. But
instead, I received a rejection letter. Christy
and I had too many children for the project!
The concern was for childcare.
We did not panic but we did wonder what
God was going to provide for the summer
months. Without the income from bus
driving finances would be tight. I did not
feel led to look for a job or other
opportunities. We simply waited, trusting
God had a plan. Two weeks before the end
of the semester, the director for the mission
projects asked if I might still be interested.
One couple who had been selected decided
not to go. One church I had interviewed with
decided they could provide childcare after
all. My answer was YES! Thank you, Lord!
The disciples did not understand why Jesus
had to suffer at the hands of the scribes and
Pharisees. They could not comprehend His
coming back to life. They were hurt and
confused about Jesus having to leave. Jesus
knew their pain and tried to comfort them.
Though we may not realize it scripture does
not give us a verbatim account of what Jesus
may have said. We have the highlights, the
main points. The gospels were written
months later. Therefore, I imagine Jesus
may have prefaced the verse above with
something like this:
Hey guys, I know this is not what you
expected to happen at all. This is not what
you have been taught about the Messiah and
His mission. But trust me this is God’s plan
which is much bigger than anything you can
imagine right now. So…“Don’t let your
heart be troubled. Believe in God. Believe
also in Me.”
When things do not go as we have planned
or imagined, we do not need to panic. It is
best if we take time to think things through,
pray, seek the Lord’s will, wait, watch for
God, and trust He has a plan and a purpose.
“Now to Him who is able to do above and
beyond all that we ask or think…to Him be
the Glory in the church.” Eph. 3:20-21
Watching God do amazing things and
thanking Him for allowing me to be a small
part of His plan…
Blessed by you….Bro. Sherman
