“Other seed fell among thorns, and the thorns came up and choked it.”                                                                                                                                                                           Matthew 13:7

In this parable Jesus describes four types of soil which received the seed of the sower. The first three were not places the sower intended to plant seed. They were simply the overflow; therefore, they were not fruit bearing. Nevertheless, the seed (word of God) was heard and may have had a future impact. The potential is there! Because the sower went out to sow!

Jesus explained the seed sown among the thorns describes those who hear the word, but the worries of this age and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful. Which implies a good start but no long-term follow-through. Each of these deterrents to faith deserves separate attention.

What would constitute the worries of this age?

Worry relates to fear, anxiety, doubt. In relation to following Christ this might include a variety of thoughts and concerns.

What will people (my family, friends, co-workers) think if I profess faith in Christ Jesus? What expectations on my life will they put on me if I become a Christ follower?

How much does my life need to change as a Christian? How many things I enjoy doing will I need to give up? Am I expected to be perfect? What will I be missing?

How much time will this require? Will they expect me to be at church every Sunday? It’s my only day off!

What will this cost me financially? I really don’t see how I can manage another bill. How much will the church expect from me?

If people of the church really knew me or my history, would they accept me? Am I good enough?

What does it mean to make Jesus Lord of my life? Do I have to give up everything?

Is all this talk about having a relationship with God real? Is that even possible? I’m not sure I can believe that.

Worry relates to fear, anxiety, and doubt. It’s the unknown that holds people back. The Psalmist spoke about this issue in Proverbs 3:5

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, lean not on your own understanding.”

Faith is too giant a step for some at first. But when they are willing, God clearly reveals Himself. If sowers are sowing!

Blessed by you… Bro. Sherman
