“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it
holy…it is a Sabbath to the Lord your
God.” Exodus 20:8, 10
Happy Father’s Day!
When my father passed away, I looked at
my brother and asked, “Do you know what
this means?” “What?” he quizzed. Since
both of our parents were gone, I said,
“We’re next!”
In my thinking the senior male of the family
got the most attention on Father’s Day,
though all of us got some recognition. It’s
always a good thing. And it’s important we
get to honor our fathers. We all want to feel
appreciated and loved. On Father’s Day we
do! That works well for us humans. But
what about our Heavenly Father?
Should one day a year be enough to appease
our “jealous” God? Especially since He set a
day each week for us to be holy, that is “set
apart” for Him? Have we taken His
command too lightly? Has worship on
Sunday become one of many options rather
than the only choice? In fact, it’s a decision
we determined long ago that going to
worship God every Sunday was a
commitment we would not forsake. Ever.
Last Christmas (Dec 25, ‘22) fell on a
Sunday. Some churches chose to not have a
service on Christmas Day! Their C&E
constituents were met with closed doors!
What kind of witness is that to the world?
Long before entering the ministry going to
church was a given not a choice. If we had
visiting relatives, or guests staying with us,
they were encouraged to come with us –
because we were committed to going. If
worship is not a priority for us as Christians,
how can we expect the world to take us
seriously?
“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it
holy…it is a Sabbath to the Lord your God.”
“If you love Me, you will keep my
commands.” John 14:15
Happy Father’s Day, Heavenly Lord! Please
forgive us for not keeping Your Day, every
week, more of a priority than it is.
Grateful for Your Grace,
… Bro. Sherman
