“You anoint my head with oil, my cup
overflows.” Psalm 23:5

Have you started this day with “Thank you,
Lord!” You should, you know. Every day is
a gift! That is why we call it the present.
Thanking God for the gift of each day keeps
us from taking each day for granted. From
somehow convincing ourselves we have
many more days to come. If we deceive
ourselves in this way, we might put off
today what we think we will do tomorrow.
But we may not have tomorrow. Do it today,
tomorrow may never come.

Each day, each hour, each minute, is a gift
of God. We are guilty of letting moments
pass without appreciating each one. A loved
one dies, and we haunted by moments lost.
We grieve over words not said, things not
done, feelings not openly shared. Don’t
delay, do it today. Take advantage of the gift
of today.

The psalmist is thanking the Lord for
blessings. Special gifts. Take note that he
gives God credit for honoring him: You
anoint my head with oil. This act of
kindness was done when greeting a guest in
the home. Just like the water provided to the
visiting guest to wash their feet. Like the
welcome kiss at the door. Anointing the
head was the way to honor the guest. God
had given a banquet for which this servant
was giving thanks to God for it and all the
blessings associated with it.

The banquet, the anointing, the honor being
bestowed, were perceived as precious gifts
from God, were overwhelming. With so
many gifts the psalmist gives thanks for
such abundance: My cup overflows.

What a great place to find peace and joy.
The place in life where we recognize the
gifts of God. Where what we have is more
important than what we don’t have. Most of
us are there. We have more than what we
need. In our closet. In our garage. In storage.
In boxes we haven’t opened in years.

STOP! Take a moment. Take a breath. Lie
down…as if in a green pasture…or beside
quiet waters. Enjoy the day, the moment.
Thank God for every gift, every blessing.
Realize your abundance. Enjoy your
overflowing cup. Give God thanks!
Thank you, Lord, for every day of life!

Overwhelmed….Bro. Sherman
