“He leads me beside quiet waters.”
Psalm 23:2
Six million cubic feet of water flows over
Niagara Falls every minute. It’s a
breathtaking sight worth seeing. There are
about 500 other falls in the world that are
taller, but none that flow the amount of
water as Niagara. This waterfall is an apt
reminder of the power of our everlasting
God.
The Sea of Galilee or Lake Tiberius is the
largest freshwater lake in Israel, supplying
about one-third of the nation’s annual water
requirement. It is a significant source of
commercial fishing. As a frequent site for
the ministry of Jesus, it serves a constant
reminder of God’s faithfulness and
provision.
Southern Illinois is the site of another
freshwater lake, the Lake of Egypt, a
reservoir with 90 miles of shoreline. My in-
laws lived there in a small cove from which
we went fishing very early in the morning.
In those early hours the surface of the water
was like a sheet of glass with a light mist
floating over the waters. The only sound was
water lapping against the boat. When I read
these words from the 23 rd Psalm: He leads
me beside quiet waters, I immediately
picture the calm of the lake in the early
morning hours. It reminds me of the
wonderful peace we can experience when
we surrender our lives to a loving God.
Peace. Lasting peace. True peace that carries
us through every trial no matter how
difficult. Because we know we are not going
to bear this trial alone. He will be with us.
Always. No matter what. Even when we
have made a mistake. We carry the Lord’s
promise with us. “I will never leave you or
abandon you.” Hebrews 13:5
He leads me beside quiet waters. We should
not miss the importance of place in this
word of encouragement. Even Jesus was
known to frequent a favorite place: the
garden of Gethsemane. It was there that He
went to pray the night before His
crucifixion.
Where is your place of quiet? Your place to
“be still and know God.” A place to get
away and simply listen and let the Lord
bring you, His peace. His presence. His
provision. A quiet place, a getaway from the
noise and distractions that drown out the still
small voice of God. Where does He lead
you when you need His peace?
Will you be able to hear His voice over the
roar of rushing waters of life? Listen for His
voice as He leads you to the place of quiet
waters. It is there you will find true peace.
Blessed by you…Bro. Sherman
