“Your word is a lamp for my feet and a light on my path.”                Psalm 119:105

Many of you reading this may be thinking I know this verse. I have a copy on my desk. Or on my living room wall. Or it’s written on my keychain. That’s great! But are you applying it? Are you letting His Word guide you in life? A flashlight is great to have when needed but it will be useless if it’s not turned on! The same is true for your Bible. It looks great on your desk, nightstand, or kitchen table but if it never gets opened and  read, it has no power to guide you in life. Sleeping with it under your pillow doesn’t help either!

It amazes me how many will say I know I should be reading my bible, but I just don’t have time. I totally understand a busy life. Time has a way of slipping by. Truth is we all have the time; we just prioritize other things first. We make time for the things we want to do.

I often hear I’m not a good reader. To that I want to say practice makes perfect. Begin slow. Read short pieces of scripture to get you started. No need to run a marathon first thing. Take your time. God will honor that.

I also want to ask do you read any other things? Your mail? Letters? News articles? Sports page? Junk mail? Emails? If reading truly is very hard, add a Bbile app to your cell phone and let it read the word to you! In this high-tech world there is a way to get into the word of God! Where there is a will…there is a way.

Would it help if you realized spending time in the Word of God is spending time with God? Read the stories of Jesus in the gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Place yourself on the stage with the disciples. Think about what it would have been like to be there, experience what they heard, saw, and felt. Relive the moment. Imagine the tone of Jesus’ voice. Or His facial expressions. What was the environment like? Hot, cold, sunny, rainy? Was the mood tense or pleasant? Who was present for this story? Why did the writer include this story? Ask yourself: What can I learn or take away from this story?

Asking questions like these will help you internalize the story and help you feel involved. You will gain better insights. You will retain more of what you are reading. You will be turning on the lamp to your feet and the light to your path!

Blessed by you….Bro. Sherman
