“…so that you, your children and their children after them may fear the Lord your God…”                                                                                                                                         Deut 6:2

We live in a culture that tries to convince us we can make decisions that only affect us and no one else. But none of us live in isolation. Almost every decision we make impacts someone else directly or indirectly.

Consider those who believe driving is a right and not a privilege. They drive well above the speed limit with no consideration of the lives they are endangering. (Texting, drinking, and primping for work, while driving are inconsiderate actions too!)

The ravages of divorce have greatly influenced our culture and damaged multiple generations of families. Thankfully divorce is showing signs of decline in America. Is it one of the contributing factors that led to devalue life, destroy the family and increase sexual perversion? The future will reveal the full ramifications. But one look at the moral decline in our culture would indicate so.

Tragically, our “all about me” generation seems to be so “self” focused, there is little consideration for the impact our choices will have on future generations. What will the ultimate effect of redefining marriage have on society? How will our children and grandchildren be impacted?

The truth is there are very few choices we make in this life that don’t touch or reach into the lives of others. I recently listened to two of my sons reflect on how the decision to move to Illinois shaped their lives. Their perspectives were quite different. With ten grandchildren in our midst, we now see the impact of that important move.

The Bible clearly warns us to keep future generations in perspective. We must realize what we decide today will have an immediate effect on tomorrow. In fact, the choices we make today may have a greater impact on tomorrow than today.

Did the disciples realize how their decision to follow Jesus would be touching lives of generations to come?

Were the Fathers of the American Revolution looking out for their own interests or for the freedom of future generations?

Have you contemplated how your decisions, your personal choices, will impact your family and friends? Your choice to attend church for worship? Or not to attend?

Are your children likely to learn to fear the Lord if you do not? What about their children? And their children’s children?

Keeping the future in focus…Bro. Sherman
