My Thoughts on Proverbs 9:
Today a couple of verses really jumped out at me. Verse 1: Wisdom has built her house; she has carved its seven columns. My Western mind wants to know what those seven columns or pillars of wisdom are, you know give me a checklist. But, Solomon does not tell us in Proverbs what the seven pillars of wisdom are. Bible scholars seem to speculate that the pillars are list in Proverbs 8: 12-14: “I, Wisdom, live together with good judgment. I know where to discover knowledge and discernment. 13 All who fear the Lord will hate evil. Therefore, I hate pride and arrogance, corruption and perverse speech. 14 Common sense and success belong to me. Insight and strength are mine.
According to this school of thought the seven pillars are: (1) good judgment (2) knowledge (3) fear of God (4) humility (5) common sense (6) understanding and (7) strength.
Other Bible scholars tie Proverbs 9:1 to the New Testament’s “book of wisdom,” James. James 3:17: But the wisdom from above is first of all pure. It is also peace loving, gentle at all times, and willing to yield to others. It is full of mercy and the fruit of good deeds. It shows no favoritism and is always sincere.
According to this school of thought the seven pillars look like this: (1) purity (2) peaceable (3) gentleness (4) reasonable (5) merciful (6) just (7) sincerity
Whatever your thoughts are on the 7 pillars of wisdom, I think verse 11: Wisdom will multiply your days and add years to your life, cuts to the heart of the entire book of Proverbs. In that wisdom helps you avoid bad things and add good things to your life.
My Prayer:
Holy Heavenly Father:
I pray that this pandemic end, but more than that Father, I ask that you make us wiser for having gone through this time.
Lord, I pray that our leaders build their decisions on the 7 pillars of wisdom and not political expediency.
I pray that You grant my family wisdom that their days and years will be multiplied.
I pray for revival in our church and an awakening in our land.
I pray all these things in Jesus Name. Amen.
