My Thoughts on Proverbs 5:
A couple of ideas arise for the reading of Proverbs 5. First, I’ve been using the New Living Translation to do these readings, most of the time I use the New King James Version. The phrase in verse 2 show discernment stood out to me. So I took a look at that verse in the NKJV, and it uses the phrase preserve discretion. I thought that discernment and discretion really aren’t that close in meaning. So I went back to the original language to see which word was maybe closer and found that its root means purpose. Discernment is the ability to judge well and discretion is taking action on without causing offense. I think in that regard they both fit. Understanding that Solomon’s purpose is to pass along wisdom and so that when we heed his advice we gain discernment and can act with discretion. This not only pleases God, but also improves our lives.
My Prayer:
Holy Heavenly Father:
Once again I come before Your throne of grace asking for mercy and help in a time of trouble. I ask that you end this pandemic. I ask that you grant us the wisdom to deal with the sickness, the isolation and economic fallout it has wrought.
I pray that You grant our leaders at leaders both in and out of government discernment and discretion in how they deal with many problems that have been created by this pandemic.
Lord, verse 18 just resonates show much with me today. I do rejoice and thank you that You put my wife into my life and she has been and will continue to be a foundation of blessing to me.
Verse 21 says: You, Lord, see clearly what a man does, examining every path he takes. I ask that You grant my congregation Your wisdom that we may minister to our community with discernment and discretion now and in the future. That we would repent for straying from the path you have laid out for us. Revive us Lord.
Father, grant us opportunities to speak the gospel with discernment and discretion that many would come into a redeemed relationship with You.
I pray these things in Jesus name. Amen.
