“Let no unwholesome word come out of
your mouth…” Ephesians 4:29
One of the first things that should change
when we surrender our hearts to Christ is
our vocabulary. If we have truly
experienced the unconditional love of
Christ, the forgiveness of our sin, and a
regenerated heart, then that which went in
should change what comes out!
Jesus said, “For the mouth speaks from that
which fills the heart.” Matthew 12:34
The Apostle Paul was deliberately clear
about the evidence of God’s Spirit within
us: “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy,
peace, patience, kindness, goodness,
faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.”
Galatians 5:22
If we could each replay our conversations of
the last twenty-four hours, what would the
words of our mouth reveal about our
outlook? Were we engaged in dialogues of
hope or despair? Love or hate? Joy or
sadness? Peace or conflict? Patience or
intolerance? Did we fulfill our role as the
salt of the earth or the light of the world? Or
have we lost or forsaken our influence all
together?
Is it time to renew our hearts? To rekindle
the fires of hope?
“May the words of my mouth and the
meditation of my heart be acceptable in
your sight, Oh, Lord, my rock and my
redeemer.” Psalm 19:14
Some believe unwholesome word only
refers to foul language. Though our world is
becoming more and more accepting of foul
or blatant cursing, this should not in any
way be exemplified in a Christian life. This
is an area of life we as Christians should
strive to separate ourselves from the world.
All our words should be spoken in love to
build up and edify the hearers.
The rest of the verse reveals this sentiment:
“…but if there is any good word for
edification according to the need of the
moment, say that, so that it will give grace
to those who will hear.” Ephesians 4:29
The old adage holds true: If you don’t have
anything good to say, don’t say it. Some
things are better left unsaid.
“Your speech must always be with grace, as
though seasoned with salt, so that you will
know how you should respond to each
person.” Colossians 4:6
Let this be our daily prayer:
“Search me, God, and know my heart, put
me to the test and know my anxious
thoughts, and see if there is any hurtful way
in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”
Psalm 139:23-24
Our world is in desperate need of those who
have a positive outlook, a loving spirit, and
a desire to restore hope and joy to all.
Blessed by you…..Bro. Sherman
