“I have glorified You on the earth by completing the work you gave me to do.”
John 17:4
There were many stories shared at a recent funeral about the life of a dear deceased brother. Family and friends testified not about the wealth he had amassed, or his farming skills, or great achievements, or even accomplishments, but of his faithful ministry to others. He had impacted the many lives of others by his acts of service and kindness. Often times incurring the cost himself. The spirit of the service identified a man who would surely hear the testimony of the Lord: “Well done, good and faithful servant, enter into the joy of the Lord.”
What a wonderful contrast to what the world values as greatness. One bat Babe Ruth used sold for $1.85 million. A motorcycle made for Elvis sold for $250,000. Marilyn Monroe’s dress worn while singing “Happy Birthday” to President John F. Kennedy sold for $1.8 million. While these iconic individuals made contributions to society, our Lord and Savior Jesus redeemed the world by His sacrificial death on the cross. His wardrobe was divided between the soldiers at the foot of the cross by casting lots. What price would someone be willing to pay for the seamless garment Jesus wore? Nothing He left behind compares to sacrifice and pain He bore in taking on the sins of the world in order to reconcile us to the Father. For that amazing gift to society, He will forever be remembered and honored.
A life of success by the world’s standards is often measured in dollars and cents, great accomplishments, and notoriety. Praise and honor from the Lord are altogether focused on another kind of life. Jesus often taught about how His followers should live:
“The greatest among you will be your servant.” Matthew 23:11
“Don’t store up for yourselves treasures on earth…But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven…For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Mt. 6:19-21
“Love one another. Just as I have loved you, you are also to love one another. By this everyone will know you are My disciples.” John 13:34-35
What stories would you like to be told about your life at your memorial service? How do you want to be remembered? Are you hoping to hear “Well done, good and faithful servant!”
As good as that will be to hear, how much better to be able to stand before God and Jesus our Lord and say confidently: “I have glorified You on the earth by completing the work you gave me to do.”
Blessed by you…. Bro. Sherman
