“Therefore, don’t worry about tomorrow because tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble on its own.” Matthew 6:34
If we read these words of Christ Jesus carefully, he is not advising us to have no concern for the future. But rather, don’t worry about it. Don’t be so consumed by your anxiety about the future that you miss the blessings of today. Each day we are given is a gift from God. That is why it is called the “present.”
There is much truth to the old adage: Don’t put off till tomorrow what can be done today. None of us is guaranteed tomorrow. Let us give thanks for today and make the most of it. We should plan for the future but live in the present while we still have some control over our lives.
James warns us: “You do not know what tomorrow will bring – what your life will be! For you are like a fleeting vapor that appears for a little while, then vanishes.” James 4:14
At 59 he had accumulated much, a five-car garage, a beautiful home on three acres, three children and several grandchildren. He loved refurbishing old cars. Three of his garages housed his prized collection of restored as new older cars. The fourth garage his work in progress. The last his working truck. Life was good until he was stricken with liver cancer. It was the fast-growing type. He only had months to live. His regret was working all the overtime to finance his joy – refurbishing old cars and neglecting time with the family, especially grandkids. The guilt pained him more than the cancer.
In all the years of ministry to those in their last days and weeks of life never has anyone ever said, “I wish I’d spent more time at the office!” Nor were there any who wished their 401k was larger or the bank account more abundant. Virtually everyone had regrets over not spending more time with those they loved. The material things they were leaving behind, the stuff they worked so hard to accumulate, were not so important any longer.
Give your most valuable gift to those you love and cherish – the gift of your time and attention. Today, don’t worry about tomorrow! Live like today is your last.
Blessed by you… Bro. Sherman
