“He lets me lie down in green pastures.”
Psalm 23:2
“Slow down you move too fast, you’ve got
to make the morning last, just kicking down
the cobble stones, looking for fun and
feeling groovy…”
This was the first line of a song by Simon
and Garfunkel; The 59 th Street Bridge Song.
I am often reminded of it when I see how
people drive well over the speed limit,
ignore stop signs, and acting like they’re on
the Indi 500! What’s the hurry I wonder?
Where’s the fire? Are they that anxious to
get to work? Really?
Alabama had the answer in their hit: I’m In
A Hurry. “I’m in a hurry and don’t know
why!” Some will blame their Starbucks
coffee. Others their high sugar diet. The
truth is we are driven! How many books are
written to help us accomplish more, manage
our time, or overcome every unproductive
minute? Are we all guilty of wasting time?
Yes. And we are all equally responsible for
not allowing ourselves the needed rest. God
gave us one out seven days to rest. It is His
command. Do we take it?
Our Good Shepherd lets us lie down in
green pastures for a reason. Several
translations say “makes us” lie down. There
is a good reason. We need it! Green pastures
represent comfort. A place to relax. Some
where away from the rat race of life. We
need time to reflect, to ponder, to evaluate
what we are doing and why. We are often
guilty of going through life by inertia. We
keep doing the same thing over and over
without thinking about it. It takes some kind
of interruption to slow us down like an
accident, an illness, or tragedy. It’s time like
these that make us take a moment to think.
Or make time to meditate on this life.
Imagine lying down in a green pasture on a
warm sunny day. A slight breeze, clear blue
skies, with no pressure to get anything done.
Just time to rest, relax and nap. No rush. No
distractions. Allow yourself to enjoy the
moment.
First, realize you are not alone. The One
who promised to always be with you is
there. Enjoy His presence. Listen. Let Him
guide your thoughts. Share yours. Open your
mind and heart to receive His peace. This
intimacy with the Lord will bring you calm
and assurance. Every struggle, every need,
will have gained a different perspective. The
time will prove to be very productive. You
will want to practice this rest again.
Slow down, you are moving too fast. Make
the morning last by enjoying each moment.
You will be surprised by how blessed your
day(s) will become.
Blessed by you….Bro. Sherman
