“For whoever keeps the entire law, and yet stumbles at one point, is guilty of breaking it all. For He who said, Do not commit adultery, also said, Do not murder. So, if you do not commit adultery, but you murder, you are a lawbreaker.” James 2:10-11
How often have I heard someone respond to the question of church attendance with: “I don’t see the need.” I should not be surprised. The very first step to becoming a Christian is acknowledging our sin and need for a Savior. Recognizing the “need” is a great motivator. Knowing we all need to eat better, watch our diet, and exercise regularly, is not enough. Most of us are not so disciplined until our health wanes or the doctor says better do this or your days are limited! Yikes! That’s motivation!
The verses above reveal another truth about sin. Taken literally most of us would say we have neither committed murder or adultery. Therefore, we need not be concerned with these two commands. But Jesus brought new light over these commands:
“You have heard that it was said to our ancestors, Do not murder, and whoever murders will be subject to judgment. But I tell you, everyone who is angry with his brother or sister will be subject to judgment. Matthew 5:21-22
“You have heard that it was said, Do not commit adultery. But I tell you, everyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” Matthew 5:27-28
If that does not convince one about sin James helps us understand sin is sin. We want to quantify one sin as greater than the other. Truth be known, disobedience to the Lord’s commands is sin. A little white lie is still a lie. Lust in the mind is still lust. No exemptions. Even a quick review of the Ten Commandments reveals we all have sinned. (See Exodus 20)
How unfortunate that some we know, and love will still believe they are without sin. The apostle John has a word for them:
“If we say, “We have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves, and the truth is not in us.” 1 John 1:8
However, no one needs to despair, James also said: “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9
Someday we will all stand before God on the day of judgment.
Are you prepared for that?
Blessed by you…..Bro. Sherman
