“So, if you do not commit adultery, but you murder, you are a lawbreaker. Speak and act as those who are to be judged by the law of freedom. For judgment is without mercy to the one who has not shown mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.”
James 2:11b-13
James reminds us we have a sin nature. We may avoid one particular sin but find ourselves committing another. We are still sinners, saved only by God’s grace not by our own merit. If we could keep the Law, Christ would not have had to sacrifice Himself for our sin. He took what judgment we deserve (death) upon Himself that we might have life. His death on the cross took our place, taking our penalty for us.
“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus.”
Romans 6:23
We are released from the law when we put our faith “in Christ” – in what He accomplished on the cross. This is the law of freedom in which we can live in peace.
“Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus, because the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and death.”
Romans 8:1
Having received the mercy of God, we can now live, speak, and act accordingly.
The command of Christ Jesus is to love others just as He has loved us. We are to extend mercy and grace to others just as He provided for us as His gifts, mercy and grace. This is how we will be judged: Did we reach out to others with the same gifts of love and acceptance?
“With the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” Mark 4:24
This seems so simple when we have in mind those, we most often spend time with, as in friends, family, and associates. It becomes more difficult when we consider those whom we overlook, avoid, or are simply unwilling to greet.
We often miss great blessings by judging others by appearance rather than by their heart. Unlike Christ Jesus we cannot know their heart without engaging them in conversation.
Take this challenge: Reach out to someone you would normally avoid because of their appearance. Engage their heart! Because:
Mercy triumphs over judgment.
Blessed by you…Bro. Sherman
