Luke 6:35-36: But love your enemies, do what is good, and lend, expecting nothing in return. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High. For he is gracious to the ungrateful and evil. 36 Be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful.
In a point-by-point contrast to the selfish, quid pro quo love of unbelievers described in the preceding verses Jesus tells His followers to love their enemies and do good to all which includes enemies and lend with no strings attached like repayment.
That kind of love is not natural. It’s supernatural. The only way you can have a supernatural love and act that way is if you have love relationship with God through Jesus Christ. It is the result of the overflowing supernational love God has for us.
The great reward is not eternal but more temporal, yet impactful. When believers love like God does, demonstrating grace and mercy, they give evidence to a watching world that God is indeed their Father and they will be astounded.
Let’s pray:
God.
I’m so grateful for the mercy you showed me by substituting Your Son for me. Thank you for extending that grace to me. I ask now that You just fill me with your love, let overflow into those whom I know, who need to see evidence of Your love, who need to accept the grace you offer.
Forgive me when I fail to love my enemies, when I fail to do good and when I expect a return.
Lord, grant me opportunities to share the hope I have.
In Jesus name I pray. Amen
